Cover art for Ruben Studdard's 'Letters From Birmingham.' BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The title of latest record, “Letters From Birmingham,” seems designed to evoke the civil-rights era, recall the spirit of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. -- or at the very least, touch on some political and social issues. Be warned; it does none of these things. The name is just a tease, like many tunes on the 16-track album, meant to draw listeners into a musical world that’s all about Studdard making sexy time. The Birmingham resident and former “American Idol” winner has a voice that’s highly suited to his goal. Fans always have known that Studdard can sing, caressing lyrics with his velvety tenor, occasionally reaching for a pretty R&B falsetto. Talent is a given. And it’s the main reason Studdard was hailed, post-“Idol,” as the successor to Luther Vandross. But not every artist has the ability to choose material that’s on par with the Vandross catalog. Studdard’s album -- which tracks a relationship from its ooh-baby start to its ego-ridden finish -- is a far cry from Luther’s romantic legacy. Ruben Studdard Letters From Birmingham Download“Letters From Birmingham” should be marked “return to sender” for its conceptual shortcomings; the playlist is riddled with songs that come off as sexist, soggy, self-absorbed or downright silly. “Wear Me,” for example, has Studdard crooning about his desire to transform into his woman’s clothes, wrapping around her legs like a clingy skirt and resting his head on her chest like a necklace. 'Letters From Birmingham' is Studdard's first record on the Shanachie label. “Pure Imagination,” a cover from the soundtrack of “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” recasts the fey, fairytale tune as a smooth bedroom ballad, while retaining its carnival-bell intro. “Twisted Love” starts with a vocal harmony that might be suited to a gospel quartet, then moves into a predictable slow jam about rolling in the sheets. “Turn U Out” allows Studdard to boast about his erotic prowess. Where Is Ruben Studdard Today“All About U” continues that theme, as the narcissistic conquerer decides to shift the attention to his partner. “Today (Hallelujah!),” a wedding song, devolves into syrupy treacle, despite its good intentions. The closing track, “June 28th (I’m Single),” probably has the highest “ick” factor, as Studdard bemoans his breakup, blames his former partner for the demise of their relationship -- he tried everything, but just couldn’t make her happy -- and encourages other women to take her place. (“I’ma need another lady,” he sings.) How his real-life ex, Surata Zuri McCants, will feel about this public declaration is anyone’s guess. One thing is certain: Studdard lacks the sensitivity chip. The song had been touted by Studdard as a finalist for the record.
